Somatic Trauma Therapy

Know That Familiar Sinking Feeling in Your Gut?

Every time you think about your trauma, your heartbeat quickens, and you can feel old thoughts and images starting to rush back in.

It’s hard to imagine going to therapy and talking about yet it again…

So, hear this:

To heal from your trauma, you don’t need to relive every detail of your past.

Seriously.

Instead, we will start with your body.

Let’s make your body feel safe again, even a thing that you can rely on and control. Let’s work on redecorating your body as a safe and cozy home instead of treacherous unpredictable landscape.

You can come home to yourself.

The great Bessel Van der Kolk writes, “The single most important issue for (survivors of trauma) is to find a sense of safety in their own bodies.”

Once safety and control are restored and you have experienced moments of ease feeling your body and emotions, we can move onto processing traumatic memories using EMDR and body-based trauma work. (Neither of which, by the way, necessitate that you retell your story).

What is body-based trauma work?

Well, there’s a reason that more and more trauma therapists are working with the body and nervous system.

When we experience something disturbing and traumatic that alters our sense of reality, that experience can remain unprocessed in our nervous system and our physiology. As massage therapists have said for a long time, “The issues are in your tissues.” Even when memories or stories feel submerged or pushed aside, our bodies hold onto disturbing memories.

If you have symptoms of hyper vigilance, anxiety, trouble concentrating, trouble sleeping, or feeling numb, your nervous system is still preparing you to respond to a threat.

You are, essentially…

Frozen in the Past

Your body may still be stuck remembering the trauma, even after you’ve stopped thinking about it.

These responses are totally normal responses to an abnormal and disturbing experience.

However, using somatic trauma therapy and EMDR can help your body and your mind to reprocess and rewire, allowing all of you to put the past in the past so that you move on to a better future.
